SriLankan Airlines began in 1979 as Air Lanka, succeeding Air Ceylon as the island's flag carrier. A partnership with Emirates from 1998 brought the current name and a modernized fleet, and in 2014 it became the first South Asian airline to join the oneworld alliance. The government later resumed full ownership.
The hub is Colombo Bandaranaike, connecting Europe, the Gulf, India and East Asia, with a particularly dense network to Indian cities. Airbus A330-300s fly long-haul while A320 and A321 aircraft cover regional routes. The livery's stylized peacock tail is one of the more distinctive designs in Asia, and seasonal charters serve the island's tourism trade.
