Druk Air was founded in 1981 as the flag carrier of the Kingdom of Bhutan, beginning operations in 1983 with Dornier 228s on flights to Calcutta. The airline opened the Himalayan kingdom to scheduled air travel and has remained its principal link to the outside world.
Druk Air's home at Paro sits at 2,235 metres in a narrow Himalayan valley, and only a small number of specially certified pilots may fly its demanding visual approach between high ridgelines. The fleet of Airbus A319s, A320neos and an ATR 42 serves destinations including Kathmandu, Delhi, Bangkok and Singapore.
