Regional Express, known as Rex, was formed in 2002 when investors combined Hazelton Airlines and Kendell Airlines following the collapse of Ansett Australia. Built on an extensive Saab 340 network across rural Australia, it added Boeing 737-800 services between major cities in 2021 before entering voluntary administration in 2024.
Rex has long been one of the world's largest operators of the Saab 340, and its turboprops link country towns such as Broken Hill, Mount Gambier and King Island with the state capitals, flying that continued with government support during administration. The appeal for sim pilots is classic 34-seat turboprop work over the outback.
