Antonov Airlines was established in 1989 in Kyiv as the commercial cargo division of the Antonov design bureau, putting the An-124 Ruslan to work on outsize freight. It operated the six-engined An-225 Mriya, the heaviest aircraft ever built, until the sole example was destroyed at Hostomel Airfield in February 2022 during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The airline specializes in cargo no one else can carry: satellites, generators, locomotives and entire helicopters, loaded through the An-124's nose door. Since 2022 operations have been based largely at Leipzig/Halle in Germany. The fleet centers on An-124-100s supported by smaller Antonov types, and Ukraine has stated an intention to complete a second An-225 airframe.
