Air Niugini was founded in 1973, shortly before Papua New Guinea's independence, taking over domestic services from Australian operators and becoming the new nation's flag carrier. It has connected the country's rugged interior with the outside world for five decades, gradually adding regional international routes across the Pacific and Southeast Asia.
From Port Moresby's Jacksons Airport, the airline serves destinations including Brisbane, Singapore, Manila and Hong Kong alongside a demanding domestic network over mountainous terrain. It became known as one of the last scheduled operators of Fokker 70 and Fokker 100 jets, supplemented by 737s and Dash 8s, with new 737 MAX and A220 aircraft on order.
