Cape Air was founded in 1989 in Hyannis, Massachusetts, initially linking Boston with Provincetown on Cape Cod. It grew into one of the largest commuter airlines in the United States, sustained by short island hops and federally supported Essential Air Service routes to small communities.
For decades the Cessna 402 defined Cape Air; the airline is now the launch operator of the Italian-built Tecnam P2012 Traveller, its purpose-designed replacement. Nine-seat aircraft serve Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, the Caribbean out of San Juan, upstate New York, and remote towns in Montana. Flights are hand-flown at low altitude, ideal territory for simulator pilots.
