SpiceJet began flying in 2005, built on the operating heritage of ModiLuft, and grew into one of India's principal low-cost carriers. Ownership has changed hands several times, including a period under media entrepreneur Kalanithi Maran, with co-founder Ajay Singh returning to take control and stabilise the airline in 2015.
SpiceJet aircraft are named after Indian spices, matching the red chilli motif of the brand. The fleet combines Boeing 737s with Q400 turboprops that serve smaller regional airports, including routes flown under India's UDAN connectivity scheme. Hubs at Delhi and Hyderabad anchor domestic trunk routes plus international services to the Gulf.
