Atlas Air: History and Facts
Atlas Air was founded in 1992 by Michael Chowdry and is named after the titan of Greek myth carrying the world. Based in Purchase, New York, it built its business on ACMI leasing, flying freighters on behalf of other airlines, and grew into a group that includes Polar Air Cargo.
Atlas is the world's largest operator of Boeing 747 freighters and in January 2023 took delivery of the final 747 ever built, closing 54 years of production. Its 747-8Fs, 747-400s, 777Fs and 767s fly for customers including DHL and Amazon, plus military charters and even passenger 747 charters, giving the airline an unusually varied global route map.
