China Southern Airlines: History and Facts

China Southern Airlines was formed in 1988 in Guangzhou from the CAAC's southern division. It absorbed China Northern Airlines and Xinjiang Airlines in 2002, joined SkyTeam in 2007 before leaving the alliance in 2019, and grew into the largest of China's big three carriers.

China Southern operates Asia's largest airline fleet, with more than 600 aircraft, from hubs at Guangzhou and Beijing Daxing. It was China's only Airbus A380 operator until retiring the type in 2022, and it now flies the domestically built COMAC C919 alongside a broad Airbus and Boeing fleet.
