Airline Profile

Pakistan International Airlines: History and Facts

Pakistan International Airlines was formed in 1955 through the merger and nationalisation of Orient Airways, a carrier founded in 1946. In 1960 it became the first Asian airline to operate jets, flying leased Boeing 707s, and in 1985 it helped establish Emirates by providing aircraft and expertise to the new Dubai carrier.

PIA flies Boeing 777s on long-haul services and A320s on domestic trunk routes from Karachi, Islamabad and Lahore, with the markhor, Pakistan's national animal, featured on a recent tail design. Its network has long included mountain airports such as Skardu and Gilgit, where ATR turboprops thread through Karakoram valleys on some of aviation's most scenic approaches.
