Virgin Atlantic: History and Facts
Virgin Atlantic was founded in 1984 by Richard Branson, flying its first service from Gatwick to Newark with a single leased Boeing 747. It challenged British Airways on transatlantic routes for decades, took Delta as a 49 percent shareholder in 2013, and joined SkyTeam in 2023.
Virgin Atlantic flies Airbus A330neos, A350-1000s and Boeing 787-9s from London Heathrow, with a network focused on North America, the Caribbean and India. Each aircraft carries an individual name and a Flying Icon figure on the nose, a modern take on classic nose art that makes the fleet easy to recognise.
