About Air Tanzania

Air Tanzania was formed on 11 March 1977, taking the Tanzanian share of the assets of East African Airways after that carrier collapsed, and started flying on 1 June the same year. South African Airways held 49 percent of the company between 2002 and 2006. The government bought the stake back and relaunched the airline as a wholly state owned carrier in July 2007.

The airline is based at Julius Nyerere International in Dar es Salaam, with further bases at Kilimanjaro, Mwanza and Zanzibar. A fleet renewal that began in 2016 brought in Airbus A220-300s, Boeing 737 MAX 9s, Boeing 787-8s and De Havilland Dash 8-400s, alongside a 767-300F for cargo. The network covers sixteen domestic airports and reaches Nairobi, Entebbe, Johannesburg, Dubai, Mumbai and Guangzhou.
