Tianjin Airlines began in 2004 as Grand China Express Air, a regional carrier within the HNA Group, and took its current name in 2009 when it was reorganized around the city of Tianjin. It grew quickly through the 2010s, adding jets and briefly operating long-haul routes to Europe and Oceania.
The airline has been one of the largest Embraer E190 and E195 operators in China, flying them alongside Airbus A320 family jets and A330s from its Tianjin Binhai hub. Its network concentrates on domestic trunk and regional routes, including many smaller Chinese cities, with secondary bases in western China such as Xi'an and Urumqi.
