Vietnam Airlines traces its origins to 1956 with the establishment of civil aviation in Vietnam and was formally organized as a state airline in the early 1990s as the country opened its economy. It modernized quickly with Western aircraft, joined SkyTeam in 2010, and became the region's leading flag carrier.
