About Icelandair
Icelandair's lineage begins in 1937 with a small airline founded in Akureyri, and the modern company took shape in 1973 through the merger of Flugfelag Islands and Loftleidir. Loftleidir had pioneered low-fare transatlantic flights via Iceland in the 1950s and 1960s, a model Icelandair still follows with its Keflavik connecting hub.
The airline funnels traffic between North America and Europe through Keflavik, timing waves of arrivals and departures around the mid-Atlantic stop. Boeing 757s served for decades alongside newer 737 MAX and widebody aircraft. Special liveries have celebrated Iceland itself, including Hekla Aurora with northern lights and a glacier scheme, and the network reaches Greenland's remote airfields.
