Air China: History and Facts

Air China was formed in 1988 in Beijing when the Civil Aviation Administration of China split its operations into independent carriers. Designated the national flag carrier, it absorbed China Southwest Airlines in 2002, listed on the Hong Kong and London stock exchanges in 2004, and joined Star Alliance in 2007, becoming one of China's three major state-owned airline groups.

Air China is the only Chinese carrier authorised to fly the national flag on its fuselage, and it operates state leadership flights. Its main hubs are Beijing Capital, Chengdu and Shanghai, served by a mixed Airbus and Boeing fleet that still includes the 747-8, making it one of the few remaining passenger operators of the type.
