Cathay Pacific Airways: History and Facts

Cathay Pacific was founded in Hong Kong in 1946 by American Roy Farrell and Australian Sydney de Kantzow, whose first aircraft was a DC-3 nicknamed Betsy. The airline grew with Hong Kong itself, became a founding member of oneworld in 1999, and later absorbed regional sister carrier Dragonair.

Cathay Pacific operates from Hong Kong International with a long-haul fleet of A350s and 777s and one of the world's largest international cargo operations. Betsy, the original DC-3, is preserved in the Hong Kong Science Museum, and the airline's brushwing livery is a fixture on trans-Pacific and kangaroo-route flying.
