Japan Airlines: History and Facts
Japan Airlines was founded in 1951 and became Japan's first postwar international carrier, launching Tokyo to San Francisco in 1954. After decades as one of the world's largest airlines, it went through a landmark bankruptcy and restructuring in 2010, returning to the stock market in 2012 as a leaner, consistently profitable company.
The red tsurumaru crane roundel is among aviation's oldest continuously used logos. JAL operates from both Tokyo Haneda and Narita, flying Airbus A350-1000s as its long-haul flagship alongside Boeing 787s and a large domestic fleet, including high-density A350-900s on trunk routes. It is a oneworld founding member and has flown numerous special Disney and tourism liveries.
