About El Al
El Al was founded in 1948, the same year as the State of Israel, and its first flight brought President Chaim Weizmann home from Geneva. It developed into the national carrier from Tel Aviv, becoming known for pioneering long-range operations and stringent security practices.
In 1991, during Operation Solomon, an El Al 747 carried more than 1,000 passengers on a single evacuation flight from Addis Ababa, a record load. Today the airline flies 787s and 737s from Ben Gurion Airport, and by tradition it does not schedule flights on the Jewish Sabbath.
